Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is essential for best waterproofing performance. Follow the steps below:

• Clean the entire surface using a high-speed water jet or wire brushing to remove dirt, dust, oil, laitance, and loose materials.
• Treat algae, mould, or fungus with suitable fungicidal wash or bio-wash.
• Remove any existing bitumen coating completely.
• Fresh cement sand screed or IPS surfaces must be cured for 4–6 weeks before coating.
• Ensure proper roof slope and level undulations to avoid water stagnation.
• Repair damaged areas using Polymer Modified Mortar (PMM) with Seal & Dry SBR or UltraTech ready-to-use repair mortar.
• Verify adequate drainage: minimum two outlets of 100 mm diameter for every 50 sq.m area.
• Seal gaps around pipe inserts using tapes or PMM with Seal & Dry SBR.
• Round off edges near parapet walls and other upstands with SBR mortar fillets.
• For old brickbat coba or cement screed roofs, check for hollowness and repair weak areas using PMM.
• Treat cracks with PMM. Expansion joints must be filled using suitable sealants.
• For shrinkage and non-moving cracks:
  
  • Apply a primer coat of Top-Shield EZY.
  • Apply a thick wet coat reinforced with mesh.
  • Allow to dry, then apply a second wet coat and cure for 5–6 hours.
  • Treatment should extend 75 mm on both sides of the crack.
  • Apply similar treatment around joints, corners, drain outlets, and stress points.
